A surveillance drone at HMP Northward on April 13 spotted two men leaving the area near the prison, where guards quickly found “a large quantity of ganja” that had been thrown over the fence, according to prison officials.

Police from the Bodden Town station responded to the report and searched for the men, but, according to a Prison Service press release, officers did not find the men.

Staff at the prison began training with a drone last year to help monitor the prison and the surrounding area.

The property around the prison is largely bush and farmland. The press release states, “The vacant land leaves the prisons perimeter vulnerable to those intent on trafficking contraband. However, with the aid of the drone, more area can be covered and once detected, will be able to assist in locating suspects and drugs.”

Local drone company AirVu has been training prison employees to use surveillance drones since last fall.
