Bill Zacharkiw’s tasting notes: Explore Burgundy, Beaujolais, Loire

Touraine Mesland 2014, Clos de la Briderie, France white, $17.90, SAQ # 861575. Organic. Shows more typical chenin notes of quince and apricot, mixed with a chardonnay-driven texture. Hint of spice and a vibrant acidity on the finish keep it interesting and fresh. Residual sugar: 1.3 g/l. Serve at 10C. Drink now-2018. Food-pairing idea: Apéritif, scallops with fruit salsa.

Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgeuil 2013, Domaine Laurent Mabileau, France red, $19, SAQ # 873000. Light, fresh, loaded with red field fruits and mouth-watering acids. This is classic Loire cabernet franc with its subtle herbal notes and fine tannins. Keep chilled and enjoy with almost anything. Residual sugar: 1.9 g/l. Serve at 16C. Drink now-2019. Food-pairing idea: Apéritif, chicken brochettes with tzatziki.

Beaujolais 2014, Jean Foillard, France red, $23.35, SAQ # 12454958. Lovely Beaujolais that is definitely a step up from what you would expect from a broad appellation wine. You get the freshness and that crunchy fruit, but the texture is surprisingly rich and there is length here as well. Finishes mineral and tannic. Good job. Residual sugar: 1.9 g/l. Serve at 16C. Drink now-2018. Food-pairing idea: Apéritif, terrines and pâtés, liver and onion.

Bourgogne 2014, Les Ursulines, Jean-Claude Boisset, France red, $23.70, SAQ # 11008121. One of the better vintages of Les Ursulines in that it shows the suave and silky texture of pinot noir while staying fresh. The oak still sticks out a touch but with a grilled, unfatty meat, will work nicely. Residual sugar: 1.8 g/l. Serve at 16C. Drink now-2019. Food-pairing idea: Filet mignon brochettes with pepper on the grill.

Mâcon Verzé 2014, Domaine Nicolas Maillet, France white, $29.45, SAQ # 11634691. Organic. Surprisingly powerful. Intense and tightly wound, this has amazing energy. Fruit is mostly citrus and green apple, with a striking matchstick and mineral finish. Let this warm a bit to really feel the texture. Residual sugar: 2 g/l. Serve at 10C. Drink now-2020. Food-pairing idea: Apéritif, smoked salmon, oysters with mignonette.

Chablis Premier Cru 2014, Fourchaume, Château de Maligny, France white, $36.50, SAQ # 480145. While less overtly mineral than the Montée de Tonnerre, the Foruchaume offers up more fruit and texture. Peach and apricot with a touch of lemon/lime. Easy-drinking Chablis. Residual sugar: 1.3 g/l. Serve at 10C. Drink now-2018. Food-pairing idea: Apéritif, lobster, lighter fish with lemon and thyme.
